Mount Mainstreet Locals: Meet Mike Galvin from Mane

On the corner of Prince Avenue and Maunganui Road, Mane has remained steadfast for the past 15 years. Born and bred in the Mount, owner Mike Galvin is known for bringing locals the best (and sometimes quirky) men’s fashions from around the world.

We learn about what’s on the horizon for the store and the other spots he hits along our Mainstreet.

What is Mane all about?

We are known for great service, having in-depth knowledge about our products, and an eclectic selection in the shop.

How did you come to start Mane?

I opened Mane in 2009. The store before me stocked traditional menswear, which I closed down. I started doing my own thing with designer labels from Europe, UK and New Zealand.

What led you down the path of men’s fashion?

I grew up in Mount Maunganui. I got into fashion by accident, really. The Mount and Tauranga at the time had very few choices for men’s fashion and I saw room for something fresh and different.

What do you love about your job?

Travelling to see the fashion shows in Europe, and buying new ranges. I especially love it when someone likes the weird and quirky styles I’ve selected.

What’s on the horizon?

We’re looking at the expansion of the wholesale side of the business, and website development, focusing on our specialty labels like Deeluxe and Mauritius Leather Jackets.

For the past 11 years I have been offering a selection of men’s and women’s clothing, but after a challenging few years since COVID I’ve decided to refocus my efforts on the best and strongest part of the business – which is our men’s range. So this year will be the last year I’ll be stocking women’s clothing (so there will be some plenty of discounted products!).

Why choose to remain straight retail rather than taking it online?

While ecommerce opens up a greater customer base it is also an incredibly competitive space to be heard in. The store thrives because my customers appreciate that we are offering a unique selection with many styles being limited edition and not readily available online. Nothing beats coming in and trying the pieces for yourself.

What do you love about the Mount?

The vibe, nice people, great weather and the beach.

Can you share some of your favourite spots along Mount Mainstreet?

My favourite coffee is from Gratitude. I also get asked a lot who my barber is, and that’s Forty Thieves. You can often find me eating a pie from One Tree Bakery, too.
