Behind ATA: Adam and Jamee Taylor

ATA is an architectural studio based in Mount Maunganui that makes clever, sustainable and innovative homes and spaces. Working closely with clients to achieve meaningful structures, their creations can be found everywhere from Pitau Street to Sumner in Christchurch, the Coromandel and Auckland.

We speak with owners Adam and Jamee Taylor about growing a business and a family in the Mount.

Tell us how ATA began.

A: About 15 years ago, we were on holiday in Bali and I decided I wanted to be in control of my chosen work hours. When we came home I handed in my notice, bought a computer and just started. Since then, we got married and became a family of six!

Share what ATA is all about and the services you offer.

A: ATA (formerly Adam Taylor Architecture) is an award-winning, full-service architectural studio committed to the creation of intelligent, sustainable, and progressive design solutions. We don’t pump out the same design over and over.

Our projects are deeply grounded in understanding our clients. We work in an open and collaborative way to ensure the end result is relevant, meaningful, and reflects their unique identities.

ATA is a team of six, including a specialist interior designer. This means we deliver pure ATA design from the spatial planning of your home to the feeling each space evokes with the use of texture, colour, materials, lighting, and furniture design/selection.

When did you first open the office in the Mount and what attracted you to doing so at the time?

J: We started with an office at the Cruise Deck initially, roughly 10 years ago. I worked from home for a couple of years first. We outgrew that space and found a new home in where we are now (above Paper Plus). The Mount’s a vibe and it’s where we live, so it feels right.

Why do you feel doing business and operating from the heart of the Mount works for ATA?

J: Everything is right here. We can go for a run or walk up Mauao, have a dip in the ocean, shower and change and be back at work by the end of the lunch break. There are also the best eateries and coffee close by. A little too close!

I think the location is also a nice touch for the people we work with. I’ll often see clients grabbing a meal after a meeting or presentation.

What sets ATA apart from other architecture firms?

A: ATA are non-repeaters.

What do you love about working in the Mount?

J: Keeping life simple. Home, studio, beach, school, and mates, all within a few kms.

Where do you like to eat and shop along Mount Mainstreet?

A & J: Gratitude – everything on their menu. Soul Boul – for the coffee. Alpino – also everything. Mount Surf Shop – for coffee in the sun, and surf wax. Rice Rice Baby – the chicken curry is gangster. And Be Organics for the produce.
