WINEMAKERS
Petane Wines,
Hawkes Bay
Hawkes Bay
We will be joined by Philip Barber, the man at the helm of ‘ Petane Wines’ . Petane is a small, dry farmed vineyard situated in Esk Valley, Hawke’s Bay, dedicated to the production of boutique single-vineyard wine. Their wines are both premium in quality and unique from vintage to vintage. With a combination of the optimal site and environment, careful rootstock and clone selection and thoughtful vineyard management practices, the Petane team works with nature to achieve well balanced, interesting wine that reflects the site and the vintage.
Due to Cyclone Gabrielle, Petane’s vineyard has suffered severe and extensive damage, but with the support of the community and customers they are working hard to create beautiful wines made with love.
Tarras Vineyards & Kuru Kuru Wine
Central Otago
We will also be joined by the magnificent Hayden Johnston of Tarras & Kuru Kuru Wines.. Following in the tradition of his 4th great grandparents Captain James and Kuru Kuru Joss, Hayden travelled and worked abroad and returned home to Otago following a hit and run accident in London and planted a vineyard in Bendigo.
Tarras Vineyards is located near the Central Otago town of Tarras. The home vineyard is called The Canyon, found high up on the terraces of the old goldfields at Bendigo in Central Otago. Established by Hayden in 2002, this organically managed vineyard consistently delivers outstanding expressions of great Pinot Noir with floral aromas, intense fruit, spicy and savoury notes, good natural acidity and impressive tannin profiles. They are distinctive, icon wines that age.
Kuru Kuru wines is another exceptional wine born through Hayden’s incredible attention to quality.
In 1836, Captain James Joss bought land from Chief Tuhawaiki on Stewart Island, New Zealand, and married Maori Grandmother KURU KURU from the Ngāi Tahu tribe. They farmed vegetables and cherished their land, inspiring Kuru Kuru Wines. Each bottle proudly portrays her moko kauae, symbolizing her esteemed position in Maori society. Kuru Kuru wines are a tribute to their heritage and connection to Ngāi Tahu, our iwi (tribe).
