Timed with the shortest day of the year and signaling the arrival of Matariki, Mount Maunganui is set to host a vibrant Midwinter Solstice celebration across three days.
Throughout the Matariki holiday long weekend, from Friday 20 June to Sunday 22 June, our slice of paradise will come alive with a series of free pop-up events celebrating community through reflection on seasonal and spiritual renewal.
Here’s a sneak peak on what to expect, with the full programme launching early June.
FRIDAY JUNE 20
– Matariki Maumaharatanga Ceremony – Hosted by Te Puna I Rangiriri Trust, followed by a paddle out and karakia at Pilot Bay with Tea153 serving warming drinks.
– Starlight Session, with live entertainment and star projections at Te Papa o Ngā Manu Porotakataka.
SATURDAY JUNE 21
– Hoe Aroha Whānau o Mauao Open Ocean Race.
– Salty Solstice Dip, invigorating ocean swim celebrating vitality, with 50 free Sea People x Midwinter Solstice ice creams.
– Matariki Market by Little Big Markets, featuring a Mount Mainstreet Treasure Hunt.
SUNDAY JUNE 22
– Silent Disco, free and family-friendly event at Mount Main Beach.
– Sand Art Workshops – Hosted by Rake Healing.
ALL WEEKEND
– MatARiki AR Sculpture Trail – Interactive Māori art experience at Te Papa o Ngā Manu Porotakataka (9–23 June).
– Live Music & Entertainment, including Mount Social Club gigs and a DJ set by Body Ocean at Astrolabe (Saturday night).
