Mount summer lifeguard patrols

This summer is going to be a goodie. With our beautiful beaches and predicted hot weather, everyone will be flocking to the Mount to cool off and enjoy our slice of paradise. Here’s a few tips on how to stay water safe this summer, thanks to Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service.

Beach patrol dates for Mount Maunganui

Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service are gearing up for another busy season on the beach! Their volunteer lifeguard patrols have already started for the summer season and will be on patrol every weekend through to Monday 1st April 2024 (Easter Monday). The Regional Lifeguard Service (paid lifeguard service managed by Surf Lifesaving New Zealand Eastern Region with funding provided by TCC) begins Thursday 14th December 2023,  on duty Monday to Friday, finishing 23rd February 2024.

Both the volunteer and regional lifeguard patrol hours vary throughout the season, so beach goers are urged to visit SafeSwim.org.nz before planning a visit to the beach to find where and when lifeguards are on duty here in Mount Maunganui and around NZ.

Here are some key tips from our Mount Lifeguards:

  1. Remember the red and yellow flags show the safest area to swim, so make sure you and your family are swimming between the flags.
  2. Talk to the lifeguards who understand the local swell and tide conditions if you’re unsure.
  3. Know your limits – too many people get into trouble in the water because they overestimate their abilities and underestimate the conditions. If in doubt – stay out.
  4. Remember to slip, slop, slap and wrap when you’re at the beach and make sure you’ve got plenty of water (especially with the hot summer predictions).

Our Lifeguard Service want you to have the best summer yet down the Mount!
