Did you know New Zealand consumes 295 million single use cups per year and most of these end up in landfill! Think about the journey that one single use coffee cup has been on before it reaches your lips and you enjoy that hot coffee for oooww maybe around 15mins if you’re lucky.
We think it’s time to make a change to the way we do our coffees. Think about these options for your next morning coffee..
- Do I have 10mins spare to have my coffee dine in? This is a nice way to unwind, catch up with friends or enjoy your surroundings.
- Do I have a keep cup I can take rather than getting a single use cup? This could be a mug from your office.
- Is there a borrow option if I have forgotten my keep cup? Now this is where we can make a difference!
A couple of our Mainstreet businesses have said enough is enough and are wanting to try and make a change and have introduced the “Borrow” option to their cafes. It’s a game changer!
Mount Surf Shop Espresso and The Chilean Way have both signed up to the Make Waste History Returnable Cup Programme. This means that next time you visit either of these cafes, you can borrow a FREE returnable cup. You then have 8 days to return the cup to any participating Make Waste History cafe. It’s as simple as that. There are 14 cafes Tauranga wide that have signed up to this system, with more making the change.
